Xian

Xi'an, the capital of the Shaanxi Province, was called Chang'an in the past. It was the most flourishing capital with spectacular palaces and well-arranged city in the Han and Tang Dynasties. Xi'an was also the starting point of the famous "Silk Road" to the west. Main tourist attractions in Xi'an include the famous Museum of Qin Shihuang's Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horsesm the Greater Wild Goose Pagoda, Lesser Wild Goose Pagoda, Drum Tower, Ancient City Walls, the ruins of Banpo Village, the site of Lantian Man, and Mt. Huashan. The Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shihuang and the Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses have been included in the World Heritage List. The handicrafts of Xi'an are simple and novel. Xi'an is one of the top tourist cities of China, due to its precious relics and historical sites. Its extensive and profound cultural connotations,a nd heart-shaking historical sites will leave a deep impression on every visitor to the city.

Spring and autumn are ideal travel seasons in Xi'an,a nd May, August, September, and October are the best travel months.

Main Attractions:

Museum of Emperor Qin Shihuang's Terracotta Warriors and Horses -
The Terracotta Warriors and Horses wre excavated in 1974 and the museum was built at the site in 1979. It is a sensational archeological find of all times that has put Xi'an on the map for tourists. The museum has three pits of terracotta warriors and horses, forming a huge legion. Altogether over 7,000 pottery soldiers, horses, chariots, and even weapons have been unearthed from these pits. Most of them have been restored to their former grandeur. The warriors and horses are meticulously made, tall and strong, and were sculptures acording to real imperial troops that protected the imperial palace of the Qin Dynasty. The museum is well equiped with tourist facilities such as restaurants, shops, parking lots, a round-screen cinema, and a photo studio.

Greater Wild Goose Pagoda -
This seven-storey pagoda is a square pavilion-like structure which was built with earth covered by bricks. It is a key historical monument and an important historical symbol of Xi'an. Visitors may climb up a spiral staircase inside the pagoda to its top and enjoy a panoramic view of the southern suburbs of Xi'an.

Lesser Wild Goose Pagoda -
It is a square brick structure with many eaves. Originally, it had 15 storeys and was 46 meters high. The doorframe was built with black stones and the body of the pagoda has a hollow-tube structure. Tourists can go up to the top along the staircases inside the pagoda. In 1487, the pagoda withstood a strong earthquake, which created a long crack from the top to the bottom. However, the crack disappeared overnight after an earthquake in 1521, a miracle indeed. As the top was destroyed, the pagoda now has 13 storeys.

Bell Tower -
A huge bell is hung in the tower to give an alarm and the correct time. With a brick and wood structure, the Bell Tower consists of the base, the body, and the top, totaling 36 meters high. Meticulously made and exquisite furniture of the Ming and Qing dynasties are on display at the exhibition hall; couplets written on scrolls ang hung on the pillars; and the doors are decorated with wood carvings telling historical and legendary stories.The ancient music - chime bells of the Qin Dynasty, ahs been performed regularly since 1995. The ancient-style ceremony of tolling the bell in the morning and beating the drum at nightfall formally started in 1997. Its resonant sound could be heard thoughout the city.. The Bell Tower is also a geographical landmark to indicate direction.

Drum Tower -
The ancient drum was hung in the tower to give the correct time at nightfall. The Bell and Drum Towers are like twins -commonly known as the morning bell and the sunset drum.The tower is very solid and is among the best wood-structure buildings or the early Ming Dynasty.

Ancient Xi'an City Wall -
The Ancient city wall in Xi'an is the largest, and the best preserved extant city defense system in China and one of the few such ancient military facilities in the world. Around the city wall is a circular park, which is decorated by pavilions, terraces, towers, and greenbelts. After it's renovation in the 1980's, it has become an ideal place for holding cultural, sports, and tourist activities.

Shaanxi History Museum -
It is a large modernized national history museum. which houses over 370,000 pieces of cultural relics excavated in the Shaanxi Province. The museum is a striking Tang style complex, spacious, magnificent and graceful. It displays the structural characteristics of China's traditional palaces.

Banpo Museum -
Banpo is the ruins of a typical village of ameternal clan community, belonging to Yangshao culture of the New Stone Age. It is the first museum of human ruins in China.This was opened to the public in June 1994, and includes immitation thatched houses of ancient dwellings where Banpo ancestors loved, the Pottery Hill, and a restored primitive village. Dressed-up Banpo Villagers demonstrate the life of a primitive village, and perform primitive dances. Tourists can appreciate and participate in the production, celebrations, sacrificial rites and dances, watch the production of ancient pottery wares, enjoy pre-historic costumes, and have a taste of the pre-historic social and local customs and ancient Chinese civilization.

Qianling Mausoleum -
This is a joint burial place of Emperor Gaozong and Wmpress Wu Zetian. This well-preserved nausoleum of the Tang Dynasty is a scenic and hsitorical monument. The ground relics mailny include stone carvings. Archeological surveys discover that Qianling Mausoleum contains a large number of cultural relics, that have not been excavated yet.
