Yichang

 

Yichang is a bright and well-developed city on the Yangtze. It is the transportation center which connects the eastern and the western parts of China . It is likewise the largest water and electric energy center in China , with its abundant water resources and  is lauded as the largest hydroelectric base in the world.

Yichang is one of the top tourist cities and a tourist attraction kwown far and wide in China. Apart from the Three Gorges, the abundant natural resources and historical sites of Yichang are also attractive. Mountains, waterfalls, caves, stone forests and pools form picturesque scenes. There are many natural reserves in or around the city, including Chaibuxi National Forest Park and Houhe Natural Reserve. As an ancient city, Yichang is the site of some important historical relics such as Qu Yuan Hometown, Zhaojun Residence and Ancient Battle Relics of Three Kingdom Period.

Yichang is famous for its local produce such as oranges, persimmons, Chinese gooseberries, and tea. They are sold in the streets and lanes and delight visitors with their excellent flavor. Buying some to take home for families and friends is a good choice for visitors. The regional cuisine of Yichang is similar to that of Chongqing ; prickly ash, hot pepper and chilli powder play an important role in people's diets. Formal restaurants, local cafes and even street stalls offer diners delicious local specialties.

Yichang has a subtropical monsoon climate with abundant rainfall in spring and summer. The city enjoys four clear seasons with cloudy and sunny springs, hot and humid summers, fine and pleasant autumns and dry winters.

Main Attractions:

Three Gorges on the Changjiang River - The enchanting Three Gorges on the Changjiang River top the list of China 's ten major scenic resorts.  The Three Gorges start from Nanjinguan in Yichang and end at Baidi Town in Fengjie.  Within a section of nearly 200 kilometers of the Chanjiang River , there are the 66-kilometer long Xiling Gorge, the 45-kilometer long Wuxi Gorge,

and the 8-kilometer long Qutang Gorge, collectively known as the Three Gorges.  In the gorges area, the mighty Changjiang flows by exotic peaks to present a great momentum.  The Four Lesser Gorges in Xiling Gorge (Bingshubaojian, Niugan mafei, Dengying, and Huangniu), the 12 peaks in the Wushan Mountain , the Three Lesser Gorges in the Wushan Mountain , Mengliangti, the ancient plank road, and Kuimen are the best known scenic spots.

Chinese Sturgeon Museum - The museum was set up in 1993 by the Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute. This institute aims to preserve the rare species of Chinese sturgeon that includes 27 species of sturgeon that still exist in the world. Chinese sturgeon, also known as Green Sturgeon, is a kind of migration fish. Having lived on the earth for 140 million years, the Chinese sturgeon is one of the oldest vertebrate lying between chondrichthian and bony fish. In this case, Chinese sturgeon are called the 'living fossil'. Chinese sturgeon is the king of the freshwater fish for it is the largest and lives the longest. During your trip to the Chinese Sturgeon Museum , you will have the opportunity to enjoy seeing not only Chinese sturgeon but also Russia sturgeon, American Paddlefish, Amur sturgeon, Hybrid sturgeon and many more. What is more, you will also have the chance to see the Chinese alligator, also called Yangtze alligator, in the Alligator Museum , along with giant salamander and mullet.

Gezhouba Water Conservation Project - This project was started in 1970 and finished in 1988. It consists of two hydro electric power stations, three navigation locks, and several sluice-gates some of which are used for accumulating water in dry seasons. At the first sight of this giant project, people will surely be astonished at its size and the majestic waterfall pouring from water gates. The project not only benefits the country and the people as a whole, but is also a feast to the eye and one's imagination.

Zhongli Mountain in Wuluo - This mountain towers 300 meters above sea level.  Perched on its top are five peaks - Kuitou Crag, Niujiao Crag, Yannu Crag, Shishen Terrace, and Maiaotu Crag.  Niujiao Crag stands solitary. Yannu Crag, resembles a pretty girl of the Tujian ethnic group and is believed to be the incarnation of Yanshui Goddess, wife of Lin Jun.  There is a tiny temple on the Shishen Terrace for worshipping the Stone God.  It is said that the people may have sons and grandsons if the pray to the Stone God.  Miaotu Crag features the Xiangwang Temple with a statue of Lin jin inside for two people to offer sacrifices and pray.  Halfway up the crag are two stone caves - one red and one black, which were believed to be birthplaces of the ncestors of the Tujia ethnic group.  Zhongli Montain is a good place for people to cherich the past and go sightseeing.

Tanzi Ridge - Tanzi Ridge holds a commanding point of the Three Gorges and the best spot to have a panoramic view of the whole project.  The ridge was so named because it looks like an inverted jar.  Scenic spots include Guanjing Terrace, a group of relief sculptures, a 100-million-year rock in the river, and a greenbelt.  The rock beards traces of water scouring and man-made holes for hoisting the rock.

Yuquan Temple - The temple now stands at the foot of the Yuquan Mountain . The existing sturctures at the temple include the Mahavira hall, Vairocana hall, East hall, West hall, and the Tower of Buddhist Sutras .  The image of Guanyin on a stone tablet at the temple is believed to be carved after a painting by Wu Daozi, a painter of the Tang Dynasty.  The Iron Stupa housing the tooth relics of Buddha stands on top of an earth mound in front of the temple.

Suspension Coffins - The Suspension Coffin Scenic Resort at Xiaofeng is separated from the Qingrenquan Scenic Resort by a River. Inside the scenic resort, there are coffins of the dead of the ancient Ba people 2,200 years ago placed more than 100 meters high up the crevices and caves of cliffs.  It remains a mystery as to how the ancients could manage to lift the coffins up to the cliffs.

Sanyu Cave - This cave is up on a cliff on Xiling mountain.  It has Xiling Gorge at the back and Xialao Stream in front. In March 819, Bai Juyi, a master poet of the Tang Dynasty, visited the cave together with his younger brother Bai Xingjian, a writer, and Yuan Shen, a poet.  Each of the three composed a poem, and Bai Juyi also wrote " Prelude to the Tour of the Cave by the Three", on the cave wall.

Yiling Square - The square is in the center of urban Yichang.  It is 300 meters long and 184 meters wide and has an area of 55,200 square meters.  Arranged in the square are 846 lamps of every category and a novel fountain with music effect.  The square has a theme on the ecosystem and is characterized by its night view.  It is a good place for people to do their exercises, carry out recreational activities, and while away their leisure time.

Xiakou Scenic Resort - It is a nattinal-class scenic attraction incorporating natural and man-made landscapes, places fof historic interest, and a modern hydroelectric project.  here you will find the Baima Cave , the Longquan Cave , Taohua (Peach Blossoms) Vilage, and some other scenic spots.

Jiuwan Stream - It is the first drifting area at the Three Gorges Project.  The banks of the stream offer the best route to view Xiling Gorge. There are Wentianshenjian, the Shentian Temple , Ganxi Gully, Jiangjun Crag, the Ruins of Zuotu, the ancient suspension coffins, Qingzhongdifeng, and other unique natural and artificial landscapes.  Drifting on the stream is an exciting and trhilling experience.

Huangling Temple - Legend says that the temple ws built to commemorate the meritorious deed of a divine ox that helped Yu the Great to make a cut on the gorge to divert water. During the Three Kingdons period, Zhuge Liang, the prime minister of Shu State , took his army to Sichuan to re-construct the temple.
